Is Snapchat dead? Here’s What Instagram Stories Means For You

When Instagram Stories debuted on August 2nd, everyone kind of freaked out.  It was like Taylor Swift/Kim Kardashian/Kanye West feud levels of pandemonium.  Everyone, especially the media, asked: “Is Snapchat dead?”

While we don’t think the social media platform is going anywhere any time soon, Instagram Stories is an amazing dupe of Snapchat, in fact, it might even be better. Why?

Because according to VaynerMedia’s VP of Platform Partnerships, Dan Grossman, “Instagram is a follower platform, where Snapchat is more of a best friend platform.”

Instagram’s user base alone is 300 million, compared with Snapchat’s 100 million.  To get a scope of what that means for brands using Stories on Instagram, one only needs to look at the feature’s first day.  Nike posted a story that received 800k views on Instagram Stories.  On Snapchat, its best video only received 66k views.

What’s more, Instagram is a simpler and more intuitive interface than Snapchat. Remember when you first started Snapchat and had no idea what you were doing?  Well, Instagram is totally user friendly.

“Snapchat’s problem – which might be slightly intentional – is that it’s always been confusing and opaque to use…. Instagram took that confusing interface and did what it’s always done best: made it useful to the masses, with a number of improvements that make it far more enjoyable to use,” explains Owen Williams of The Next Web.

So what does this all mean for your online brand?  To put it plainly, you need to use the platform that is best for you.  If you have a ton of Snapchat followers, you can still continue to use it.  If you are already a big player on Instagram, experiment to see how Stories works for you.  The best part is, you don’t have to choose between the two.  You can still have the best of both worlds.
