Twitter Is Cracking Down On Trolls for Women and Minorities

DEC. 13, 2016:

If you are a member of Twitter, you know it can be a nasty place, especially for women and minorities.  Even the CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, has said so himself.  This summer, Dorsey admitted the social network had a major troll problem, and the company hadn’t done enough to stop the hateful and abusive attacks on certain users.

“No one deserves to be the target of abuse on Twitter,” he said during the company’s quarterly press call in July. “We haven’t been good enough at ensuring that’s the case, and we need to do better.”

Well, it looks like Dorsey has stuck to his word because Twitter recently announced it is rolling out three new ways to control trolls. First of all, the company created a “mute” option, in which users can mute notifications based on keywords, phrases and conversations.  Secondly, it’s making it easier for users to report trolls by flagging hate speech.  That will help “reduce the burden on the person experiencing the abuse, and helps to strengthen a culture of collective support on Twitter,” the company said. Lastly, Twitter has retrained and staffed up its support team in charge of policing trolls. These individuals have even gotten specific training on “cultural and historical contextualization of hateful conduct.”

Still, Twitter says these new efforts will not stop trolls completely. “No single action by us would do that. Instead, we commit to rapidly improving Twitter based on everything we observe and learn,” the company said. “We honor our role in protecting your right to speak freely and our collective responsibility to human dignity.”

We will keep a close eye to see if anything changes over at Twitter. Until then, we’d love to hear from you. Have you dealt with trolls on Twitter? Do you think Twitter’s new features will help solve the problem?
