It’s Fashion Month – all the biggest names in the industry will be taking their skills on tour, from New York to London, Milan and Paris. But what does it take to do beauty backstage? Here’s what you need to make it as a Fashion Month MUA…

Be a fast learner

Often you will only be given the makeup look right before the show, as conceived and demonstrated by the designer’s ‘key’ or lead artist. As part of the makeup team, you have got to take this information in fast and get to work – you’ll only have around 10 minutes to complete the look on each model.

Be a team player

You might be surprised at the size of the backstage team at any Fashion Week show. There might be multiple people styling a model at one time, so you’ll need to be able to work together. This isn’t just about being flexible while doing your job, but also about the economies of space – the best teams will take up different positions around the model and switch at exactly the right time.

Be adaptable

Things change. There are times when a designer might decide to rework the beauty look moments before the models are due on the catwalk. You have to be ready to accommodate this, creatively and efficiently, without breaking into a sweat. That’s the nature of doing a live show – and what makes it super exciting.

Be cool

Keeping calm on the job will go a long way at Fashion Week. There is a ton of distractions – journalists and photographers, not to mention a few celebrities – and also the pressure of creating the perfect look in a restricted timeframe. You’ll be working with some of the best in the business, so you will want to leave a good impression. You are a professional. Leave the drama at the door.
