NOV. 9, 2016:

As a content creator, you share much of your life online. While getting personal and sharing your experience with your audience is a great thing, it can also be dangerous, especially since the world is unfortunately filled with people who may try to use your personal information for malicious reasons.

Sites like Spokeo.com and MyLife.com share your personal information, often without people’s consent or knowledge.  A quick Google search of your name and address may produce your name, address, phone number, occupation, marital status, relatives and even a satellite view of your house!

Thankfully, there are a few ways to clear your personal information off the internet.  Read on for a few tips and tricks.

Know the sites
Spokeo.com and MyLife.com are the main contenders here.  They publish personal information online, which can be easy to find if you have a home-based business or have purchased a home.  Since most content creators have a home-based business, it’s important to check if your address is searchable on these sites.

The easiest way to do this is to Google your name and your street address.  We are warning you, the results might be terrifying.

The silver lining
The good news is most sites include a privacy policy that allows you to remove your personal information.  The bad news is, they make it a long, annoying process.  For example, here is how to get your info off Spokeo:

– Search for your profile on Spokeo. When you get to the page that contains all your info, copy that URL.

–  Go to the Spokeo home page and scroll down to the very bottom. Click on “Privacy.”

– Scroll down to the bottom of the “Privacy” page and click on “opt out form.”

– Fill out that form and paste the URL from your profile. Done!

Other sites to know
Spokeo.com is not the only site that publishes your personal info, but thankfully most sites offer an “opt out” form or solution.  Here is a list of guilty parties:

  • MyLife.com
  • 411.info
  • Manta.com
  • City-Data.com
  • Whitepages.com

The importance of being vigilant
We recommend searching your name and address every few months, especially as you gain more of an online following.  New sites pop-up all the time and are desperate to publish your personal info.  As public figures, which is essentially what you are when you become a YouTube personality, it is your responsibility to protect yourself from online predators.

How often do your search your name to see what’s out there? Share in the comments!
