If you are creating awesome videos on YouTube and no one is watching them, you may be feeling a little defeated. There’s nothing worse than spending a lot of time creating awesome video content and then not having anyone to watch it! In this post, we will quickly cover how to use SEO to drive more traffic to your videos.
Quick overview: SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is the process in which internet content is ranked on SERPs (search engine results pages). Essentially spiders are constantly crawling the Internet and indexing websites and videos for their content. That way when someone searches on a SERP like Google or YouTube, they can display the most relevant results to the searcher. By understanding SEO a little more, you can use it to your advantage to get your videos to show up in more searches.
Define Your Long Tail Keyword
Every YouTube video should have a long tail keyword. A long-tail keyword is a search term that is somewhere between two to five words long and is more targeted as opposed to reaching a mass audience.
Here’s an example:

Long-tail keywords are all about visibility. I’ll give you an example. Let’s pretend a new bakery opened up in Camarillo, CA. This is about 50 miles outside of Los Angeles. Now even though LA is a much bigger and well-known city, they will want to optimize their new website for Camarillo and surrounding towns, not LA. Why? Because it’s more targeted and a smaller lake to fish from, meaning it’s more likely they’ll show up in the SERPs.
It’s the same with keywords. Using just “braid” is a much larger audience. Sure, you might think you can target EVERYONE looking for ANY kind of braid, except you’ll never break through the clutter. By having descriptive long-tail keywords like “Easy Pull-Through Braid” you may have fewer people searching for it, but there is less clutter meaning you’re more likely to be at the top of the search results pages and, thus, will get more clicks.
Now it’s time to take that long-tail keyword and put it to work. You want to make sure it’s included in the title of your video. Next, you want to use it to optimize your description box. It’s important to remember that YouTube cannot watch your video to figure out what it is about. It relies solely on your title and description box to understand what the video is about.
You want to fill your description box with relevant long-tail keywords to tell YouTube what this video is about so they can recommend it to people searching. The first 3-4 sentences in every YouTube video description box should be about what this video is about, including these relevant keywords.
By taking the time to incorporate SEO practices into your YouTube videos, you can gain more organic traffic from people searching on YouTube and Google.
