How to Actually Stick to New Year’s Resolutions

JAN. 3, 2017:

Did you know that although half of Americans create New Years Resolutions, only about 8% follow through on them? If you’ve ever created a New Years Resolution, you know it can be easy to fall off the wagon. No matter what your goal is in 2017, keep reading for a path to new years resolution domination.

Set clear goals

At the end of the day, a resolution is a goal. If you just want to “make more money in 2017,” that is not specific enough. How much money do you want to make and in what time period? If you want to lose weight, how much and by what month?

Measure and track

Tracking your progress will help you stay motivated. If you want to increase your hit rates on your website, keep a running tally of them every day. As the number increases, you’ll get even more incentive to work hard.

Schedule it

Make working toward your goal a part of your day, a non-negotiable meeting with yourself. If you want to reach 10k Instagram followers by March, make sure you’re liking and commenting for a fixed period of time each day. You have to put in the work!

Be patient

Change doesn’t happen overnight, but it you are consistent, you will see things happen over time. Don’t get discouraged if you reach a plateau or maybe backslide. It is part of the process.

Talk about your goals

It is called accountability and support, and it’s what you get when you tell people about your goals. Share it on Facebook, tell your parents, your friends, anyone who will listen. They will help you keep you to your word.

Baby steps

You have to start somewhere, and doing something is better than doing nothing. Say you don’t feel like going to the gym today—fine, take a walk with a friend instead. Putting in some effort is better than putting in no effort, and small changes every day make big changes in the long run.
