As you spend your days online, no doubt you will have probably used Safari, Google Chrome and Firefox – these are some of the most well-known web browsers in the world. But have you heard of Brave? And no, we’re not talking about the movie.

Founded by the inventor of Javascript and co-founder of Mozilla, this under-the-radar browser that says it has ‘your interests at heart’ is making headlines after its latest update introduced a new feature that could make it a must-have among YouTube content creators.

What’s in it for me?

Brave now enables YouTube creators to monetize their content. ‘Your compensation no longer needs to be based on vague rules or mercurial algorithms,’ it states. ‘Viewers reward you directly.’ In other words, your fans can directly donate money to you, rather than to Google or YouTube.

How does it work?

The ‘built-in payment system works with tokens that your audience members purchase’, also known as a BAT (Basic Attention Token). They can either set an amount they want to give you per month (Brave calls this ‘pinning’) or set a monthly budget for themselves, then ‘based on how much time they spend viewing your content, you get a share’. Once you have a bunch of tokens, you can exchange them for dollars.

Where do I sign up?

Head to the Brave website and follow its verification process to prove that you’re an authentic YouTube producer. You’ll also need to be OK with setting up a wallet with the company’s partner, Uphold, via the payments dashboard. Think of it as a kind of Cloud-based money handler.

Are there any other advantages?

Brave is fast. Super fast, in fact. It can ‘load major news sites 2 to 8 times faster than Chrome and Safari on mobile’, for example. Because of this, Brave also says it’ll save you time and even cash: ‘The average mobile browser user pays as much as $23 month in data charges to download ads and trackers… Brave blocks [these], so you don’t have to pay for them.’ This lowers risks from malware to protecting your privacy and identity with HTTPS upgrades.

So, what do you think? Will you be trying Brave? Share your thoughts in the comments!
