AUG 15, 2017:

It’s all about pucker power this year, as beauty influencers from vlogger, A Hearts Desires to high-fashion makeup artist Val Garland have been taking lip art to a whole new level! Here’s the lowdown on the latest trends to try…

Marble

Teen Vogue reported on this stunning stone-effect art back in April, highlighting looks from the dark and mesmerizing (Makeup by Dena, @aheartsdesires) to the bold and bright (@leticiamua, @genevievejauqet). The trick apparently is to start with a solid base ‘paired with swirls and flecks of a second and third color for the marble pattern (best applied with a thin brush). Finish with a layer of clear gloss, and voilà! Your countertop lip art is complete.’

Caviar

Sitting between the glitter lips, textured lips, and 3D-embellished lip trends, caviar lips have been spotted on makeup artists Vlada Haggerty (@vladamua) and Greta Agazzi’s (@greta_ag) pages. Haggerty used ‘genuine black diamonds and black onyx beads’ in her take, while Agazzi advised using MAC Lipglass and NYX Glitter Primer as bases before creating texture using lots of tiny red beads (her toilet paper lip art is also insanely good).

Velvet

We have makeup artist Jessica Ferrelli @jessica_ferrelli) to thank for the latest revival of velvet. She posted two pics of her exclusive creations, made using real velour. The secret to how she achieved it is still being kept under wraps! But her inspiration came from Pat McGrath’s Matte Trance range. There are lots of tutorials on how to create the look and feel of velvet using lip color (see Kandee Johnson, for example), but we’re yet to discover the secret to Ferrelli’s fabric formula.

Post-Makeout

Bustle writer, Annie Walton Doyle picked up on this look at Preen’s fall/winter 2017 runway show and recreated it to flattering effect (hint: it starts off with a toothbrush). We have MUA Val Garland for that perfectly smudged finish: ‘It’s about kissing and snogging. This girl goes clubbing, she’s confident and she loves kissing,’ she told Vogue’s Flora Macdonald Johnston backstage. ‘I’m using MAC’s Lip Mix and smudging out the line, using a larger brush and buffing it out, and then applying gloss within the lip line but not outside it.’
